South Carolina is second most popular moving destination in U.S. - Charleston SC Real Estate News

Americans are moving in search of cheaper places to live, more jobs, warmer climates and green space and more are finding a new home in South Carolina.
South Carolina was the second most popular moving destination in the U.S according to United Van Lines’ 39th Annual National Movers Study, which tracks customers’ state-to-state migration patterns over the past year. Oregon was the top moving destination for the third year in a row.
The Southern states as a whole saw a high number of people moving in with 53 percent of total moves being inbound. In a separate survey of its customers, United Van Lines found the top reasons for moving South included company transfer/new job, retirement and proximity to family.
“The aging Boomer population is driving relocation from the Northeast and Midwest to the West and South, as more and more people retire  warmer regions,” said Michael Stoll, economist, professor and chair of the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“We are seeing people drawn for lifestyle issues: more green space and looking for a lower cost of living,” said Melissa Sullivan, director, marketing communications at UniGroup, which operates United Van Lines.

July Newsletter - Charleston SC Real Estate

July is a month where a lot of locals take their vacation to escape the heat.  However, this summer heat makes for great produce.  The local farmers markets are a great place to get some yummy vegetables and fruit and boiled peanuts.  The most popular is probably the one in Marion Square downtown each Saturday morning.  But there’s also Monday at Freshfields at Kiawah, Tuesday at Moultrie Middle in Mt Pleasant, Thursday at Park Circle in North Charleston, Saturday on Johns Island on Maybank Hwy, and Sunday at the Pour House on James Island.  There’s also Music on the Green at Freshfields each Friday night and Starlight Theatre at Freshfields each Wednesday night.  And there’s always Second Sunday on King Street to enjoy.  Of course there will be fireworks displays all over town on and around the 4th.

Here’s your July calendar of events:

  • 1,2 – Megadock Billfish Tournament
  • 8 – America, Chas Music Hall
  • 10 – Culture Club, N Chas PAC
  • 14 – Robert Earl Keen, Chas Music Hall
  • 15 – 11th Annual Palette and Palate, French Quarter
  • 15 – Junior Brown, Chas Music Hall
  • 15 – Friday Nigh Boogie, Mt Pleasant Pier
  • 16 – Art Garfunkel, Chas Music Hall
  • 16 – Shaggin’ on the Cooper, Mt Pleasant Pier
  • 22 – Moonlight Mixer Shaggin’, Folly Pier
  • 26 – Dave Matthews, N Chas PAC

All things are really positive for Charleston right now and it’s led to a boom in the real estate market.  We’ve now pretty much fully recovered from the 2008-2010 recession.  Areas like Mt Pleasant, James Island, West Ashley, the peninsula, and the resort islands have more than recovered.  The Summerville and Goose Creek areas have finally gotten back to over $100/sq. ft. and are frequently seeing median prices over $200k again. Through May we are up 9.4% in transactions over the same 2015 period and up 5% on median sales price. We will probably sell over 16k homes this year and the median sales price is now at an all time high of $240k.  We were just ranked 12th in the country in Small Business Friendliness and made the Top 10 list for the best place for millennials to purchase a home.  It’s a great place to call home.
